I appreciate your connection request however before I accept I need to know the reason for the request - e.g. relating to: a specific reason for an identified mutually beneficial business relationship; joining Fintech Ireland; a specific post I wrote; a regulatory issue; speaking engagement etc.
Please don't direct me to your profile as I won't seek to find a reason or reply simply "looking to collaborate" without a specific matter.
I ask for this in my Linkedin profile (I do the same when sending a connection request). I am sorry, but unfortunately I don't get the time to look a person's profile, thus your message is the driver for us getting connected on Linkedin.
What is this about?:
You may have been directed to this page following my response to your request to connect with me on Linkedin where there was no reason in your request for connecting or if you used an automatic Linkedin suggestion like "I would like to connect with you on Linked" etc. I also appreciate that the Linkedin Mobile App may not allow a person to include a reason when sending a connection request (it would be good if they changed that!)
I have noticed many connection requests coming from fake or hi-jacked Linkedin profiles. Unless I know the person, met them at a conference/event or we exchanged communications, I will not generally accept a request unless it is accompanies with the reason for the connection request.
I have also found my approach of getting to know the reason for a connection request has been helpful in growing my network to 9,940+ carefully curated connections (and 15,100+ followers). If I received a linkedin connection request from you and you didn't tell me why you wanted to connect, all I am doing here is asking for you to tell me the reason why you wish to connect to advance you request. I am not preaching, rather just giving you the courtesy of an explanation. See my Linkedin Post.
What to do: I don't wish to miss an important business or professional opportunity to connect with people. I appreciate that sometimes the LinkedIn app and mobile version make it difficult to send a personalised message in the request. If you wish to connect, respond to my reply to your request and provide a short reason for the request (e.g. relates to fintech, regulation, business opportunity, meeting at a conference, someone recommended me to you, joining a linkedin group I manage - e.g. Fintech Ireland). If you cannot message me through linkedin, use this email changing the AT to @ of course! Linkedin AT peteroakes.com

Until we connect:
My work these days is as a non-executive director of regulated financial services companies and board advisory member of various regtech and fintech companies (Ireland, UK & Australia). I consult on fintech/regtech, financial services regulation, enforcement and business strategy and work with law firms in Ireland and the United Kingdom on specialist finserv and fintech matters. I am regular speaker at fintech and financial crime conferences in Europe (incl. UK), the Middle-East and the USA. I am a former central banker (Central Bank of Ireland and Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority) and regulator (Financial Services Authority and ASIC). I have been working on fintech initiatives since 2009, including while Director at the Central Bank of Ireland (2010-2013) where I was a proponent of new technology to provide less friction, more efficiency and greater innovation in Irish financial services.
Hopefully this message gives you a good batch of information. I get a lot of connection requests and I accept those where there is an immediate or an identifiable near future opportunity. I don't use Linkedin to connect with someone unless there is a meaningful reason. By following my suggestions above, you might identify a reason to connect; in which case I would be happy to advance but please put the reason for the request into your connection request, as I prioritise those.
[Note: If you have decided you don't wish to connect, simply withdraw you connection request. If I don't hear back from you I will delete your request. If the message I sent you informs that I have deleted your request you can send a new request with the reason for the connection request.]
