Central Bank of Ireland - UNRESTRICTED

Dear All,

Please see below information that you may wish to share with your clients/members.

For Information:
The Eurosystem is inviting firms to build and test new payment features on the digital euro infrastructure during the first half of 2027. If your firm works in payments, retail, fintech, AI or public services, this is an opportunity to work hands-on with the digital euro before any launch decision is made, and to influence how it is designed.

What participants get
Selected firms will work with the ECB to develop and test solutions on the digital euro's core infrastructure. For payment service providers and fintechs, this gives an early view of the features and services you may be expected to offer, and time to develop your product thinking before the wider market. Your work will feed into the design of future releases. The ECB may invite participants to present their results at an event and will publish the key findings, giving your firm visibility with the Eurosystem and with peers across Europe. The ECB will also consider geographic diversity when selecting participants.

Where you could contribute
There are two strands. The experimentation strand runs from January to June 2027 and asks firms to develop and test working features in four areas: electronic receipts built into payments, split payments with multiple payers or recipients, conditional payments that execute automatically when set conditions are met, and new features for payment apps. The exploration strand runs as workshops at the ECB in Frankfurt during the first half of 2027 and looks further ahead at AI in payments (including AI agents and micropayments) and at public uses such as transport, utility bills and smart city services.

What's involved
Experimentation participants will build and test a solution and submit a proof of concept and an outcome report. Exploration participants attend on-site workshops. Joint applications are encouraged, particularly pairings across roles such as a merchant with a PSP or technology provider. The call does not include funding, and a decision to issue the digital euro will only be taken once the EU legislation is adopted.

How to apply
Complete the ECB application form, indicating which strand and focus areas interest you, your motivation, expertise and proposed use case. Send it to [email protected] by 17:00 CET on Monday 9 November 2026. The full call document is available here

Should you have any questions please contact [email protected]

Kind regards,

H1 2026 Irish and Global fundraising by, and investment in, fintech.  Irish fintechs raise circa $158m (€140.3m)

Busy time in Irish fintech fundrasing and investment.

During H1 2026, notwithstanding that Irish and European financial technology companies have found it more difficult to raise money this year as political and economic instability continues to dent investor risk appetites, we note the following deals:

  • US fintech Payoneer paid $13m to acquire Irish employment firm Boundless. Read more HERE.
  • Niall Dennehy's NestiFi raises seed round for AI family co-investing platform:  Read more at: Article 1 and Article 2.  Congratulations on the fundraise Team Nestifi and also the new look website! As Niall says - "Let's talk family wealth".
  • Sean Mullaney's Seapoint raises €7.5m as ‘financial home’ to start-ups, Ann O’Dea (Silicon Republic).  Seapoint is a full financial control for startups. Read more HERE.
  • Irish fintech ZeroRisk (Gary Nolan, CEO & CoFounder) raises €8.6m to expand payment risk platform, Charlie Taylor (Business Post). Read more HERE.
  • Fonoa - a Dublin based tax automation service raised $110m (€97.7m)
  • Circit - a Dublin-based audit platform raised $22m (€19.5m)
  • Trrue - the Irish blockchain start up was acquired by Fundbank (now IRACE Digital Bank) in a $11.83m (€10.5m) deal, where Dealroom reports a figure of $11.2m (€10m).  We are delighted that Owen O'Driscoll a co-founder and CEO of Trrue who is now Chief Innovation Officer at IRACE will join us as a speaker at the Fintech Ireland Summit.  He will be included in an announcement later this week along with other speakers.  Together with Joe McCann, I met with Owen in Malta recently when working there on Fintech Malta.
  • Trustap - a Cork-based transaction platform raised $10m (€8.9m).

See KPMG's Irish fintech attracted $158m (€140.3m) investment in H1’26 for further details on the last 4 fintechs above.  KPMG says that the the $158.13m (€140.3m) was raised across seven (7) deals in H1’26, down 9.4% from $173m across 13 deals in H1’25. See Report HERE.

Fintech Ireland checked the details published by the Irish Venture Capital & Private Equity Association ("IVCA")  in its recent Venture Pulse Q2 2026 & H1 report and its previous Q1 2026 report.  From our reading those companies appearing in the IVAC marked 'fintech' raised €119.4m ($134.5m).  These are:

1) H1 2026 & Q2 Report
  • Sorted - FinTech - Crypto at €3.8m ($4.3m)
  • Payslip - Fintech - €5m ($5.6m)
  • Seapoint - Fintech-Ai - €7.5m ($8.5m)
  • Trustap - Fintech - €8.7m ($9.8m)
  • Fonoa - Fintech - €94.4m ($106.3m)

2) Q2 2026 Report

In its Q1 2026 report, the IVAC recorded Trustapp raising €8m ($9m) and Circit raising €20m ($22.5mn).  There is no record of Trustapp raising two lots of €8mn this year, so we have assumed Trustapp was double counted by the IVAC? Thus when adding Circit's €20m raise, then it appears that in H1 2026, Irish fintechs arguably raised circa $158m (KPMG records $158m and IVAC records $157m).

Interestingly, the IVAC reports that in terms of sector breakdown, that Fintech represented 26% of the H1 2026 total.  Completing the 100% figure are Lifesciences (26%), CyberSecurity (14%), Software (14%), Deeptech (7%),  AI & ML (7%),  Envirotech (5%) and Others (2%)

It seems that Irish and European financial technology companies have found it more difficult to raise money this year as political and economic instability continues to dent investor risk appetites. Read more HERE.

Global:
In terms of global investment in fintech, KPMG reckons that the figure reached was $103.1b (€915m) in H1’26.
